Monitor Distance Calculator
Pick your screen size and resolution to see how far to sit, how deep your desk should be, and where the top of the screen belongs.

| Size | Distance (in) |
|---|---|
| 24 in | 36.0 in |
| 27 in | 40.5 in |
| 32 in | 48.0 in |
| 34 in | 51.0 in |
Why viewing distance matters
Sit too close and your eyes work harder while your neck tilts down. Sit too far and you lean in or squint at small text. The sweet spot depends on screen size and pixel density, so a sharper screen lets you sit closer without seeing individual pixels.
Match the screen to your eyes
Set the top of the screen at or just below eye level, then tilt the panel back slightly. That keeps your gaze roughly centered on the display. A monitor arm makes this easy to adjust if you share the desk or switch between sitting and standing.
Desk depth and layout
The suggested depth leaves room to sit back at the right distance without leaning forward. If your desk is shallow, a monitor arm can pull the screen closer over the edge or free up space beneath it. Keep the screen near an arm length away as a quick check.

Questions about this calculator
How far should I sit from my monitor?
A common rule is about 1.5 times the diagonal for a 1440p screen and one times the diagonal for 4K. That puts a 27-inch 1440p monitor near 40.5 in (102.9 cm) and a 27-inch 4K near 27 in (68.6 cm).
Does screen resolution change viewing distance?
Yes. Sharper pixels let you sit closer without seeing the grid, so a 4K screen can sit nearer than a 1080p screen of the same size. A 1080p screen usually wants about two times the diagonal.
How high should a monitor be?
Set the top edge at or just below eye level and tilt the screen back a few degrees. That keeps your gaze near the center of the panel and your neck relaxed.
How deep should my desk be for a monitor?
Aim for enough depth to sit back at the right distance without leaning in, often around 28 to 32 in for a large screen. A monitor arm can help if your desk is shallow.
Is a monitor arm worth it for viewing distance?
Yes if you switch between sitting and standing or share the desk. An arm lets you set the distance and height once, then move the screen to match your posture.
Can I sit too close to a large monitor?
Yes. If you turn your head to see the corners or you notice eye strain, you are too close. Back up until the whole screen sits comfortably in view.
Does this work for curved monitors?
Yes. Measure the diagonal the same way and use the same distance. A gentle curve can make the edges feel closer, so you may prefer to sit a little farther back.
